Wild orangutans are in dire straits as forests are dessimated to establish palm oil plantations and timber estates. During the past year OFI has been rescuing wild orangutans regularly from dangerous situations where they are starving in tiny fragments of forest surrounded by plantations or wastelands of elephant grass from slash and burn horticulture in years past. Most orangutans OFI rescues are subadult it’s adult males. Many are starving. Some are riddled with shotgun pellets or suffering from beatings with blunt instruments or sharp tools. When wild orangutan mother SweetDee and her small make infant Simon were rescued, they were very skinny. After 3 weeks if nutritional therapy at OFI’s Care Centre mother orangutan has gained 18 pounds. Tiny Simon gained 0.3 pounds and weighed 5.6 pounds when he and his mother were released some days ago. We usually try to release wild orangutans as soon as possible after capture and health check but in this instance we felt it was better to have the adult female gain some weight before we returned her to the wild.
