After several days of prep and getting into position for an attempt on the 7000ft NW face of Tyree, we spent two days pushing on the mountain. Unfortunately major avy indicators and conditions dictated the day. 5000ft of steep climbing to our high point meant reversing 5000ft on our front points with beautiful skiing off to our side. Sirens calling but we avoided the temptation. A few turns near the bottom were all we got. Sometimes the goal is just to live to ski another day. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve known @hilareenelson for almost twenty years. Incredible to watch her storied career unfold in the mountains over that time. I don’t know how many expeditions she’s been on but it’s a lot...by any standard. I’d always admired Hilaree’s tenacity and endless motivation as well as her humor and low key demeanor. Don’t mistake that for being timid. She’s not. Among other accolades, she was the first woman to climb both Everest and Lhotse in 24 hours, she was National Geographic’s Explorer of the year in 2018 and recently, w @jimwmorrison, made the first descent of Papsura Peak in India and the Lhotse Coulior on the fourth highest peak in the world. In short she has quietly been amassing some of the most serious ski mountaineering first descents on the planet. ⁣ ⁣ My first expedition with Hilaree was in 2011 when we skied Denali together. I checked her sled one day and realized she had been adding much of the weight and gear of other less experienced members of the team on her sled. I could barely move it. It goes without saying that’s the kind of partner you want on an expedition. Someone that’s got your back. It was a pleasure to be back in the mountains with Hilaree in Antarctica.
