It took me a bit to be able to recognize the difference between the two from a distance, but the easiest way to tell is the elongated head/neck that droops down on the white rhino. White rhinos can barely pick their own heads up; black rhinos have much smaller heads. White rhinos are also much more social than black rhinos, and it is usually a lot easier to view them up close.
White rhinos are among the largest land mammals. Interestingly, their name doesn’t refer to their color but comes from the Afrikaans word “weit,” which means “wide,” and refers to the animal’s mouth. This female and calf were pretty easy to spot on a daily basis, as they tended to roam the same general area each afternoon. Lewa has done an incredible job protecting these prehistoric animals.
