Going through pictures and videos for Enzo’s (virtual) 5th grade culmination and came upon this gem from 1st grade. I must quietly share my own inner response here—one I would never say out loud to restrict my son in any way. But here it is: “NO! NO, ENZO, YOU CANNOT GO FASTER! You cannot grow up so fast, with the kind of electric speed that makes my head spin and my vision blurry by the years tumbling into each other so that I cannot keep track of last month or last year.” My baby boy will always be that, and yet is clearly no longer... These days and times are overwhelmingly emotional. To his emerging spirit I can actually whisper, “Ok Zo, go catch that beautiful rush of speed and wind and air on your bike. Pedal fast and hard, but then take equal time to cruise, my love. Life is big and beautiful and hard. But your enthusiasm for it will take you far!” And this is only 5th grade graduation in quarantine times—imagine the mess I’ll be at grander junctions. 😭😭😭
