Living art: much like a photograph, framing is essential to garden design and appreciation. A Japanese garden designer will “prescribe” the view of the garden through the use of architectural elements like windows and paper shoji screens, often indicating to the visitor the optimum spot for viewing. The designers intend observers to see the gardens at specific angles insuring that the details of the garden will not be missed and providing intimacy. In the last photograph, one section of the garden at Adachi Museum, is permanently showcased in a picture frame hung around a window to be viewed from the inside of the building as a masterpiece of living art. #japanesegardendesign #japanesegarden #livingart #prescribedviews
