Japanese Baseball (Yakyu) is so popular that many consider it to be Japan’s national sport. Imported from the United States in the 1860’s, its reach continued to spread over the years to the point that it became the most watched and played sport in Japan. Baseball teams compete at all levels from elementary school teams to the professional leagues. But there are differences with the American game in rules and most spectacularly in the stands where cheerleaders whip the crowd into a frenzy waving banners, banging drums, blaring trumpets, and singing fight songs virtually non-stop throughout the game. Fans never have to miss a minute of the games with individual video screens above every urinal in the mens room.
