I’ve been at a loss for words all week after seeing the abhorred actions that transpired with George Floyd. It set into action a string of protests nation wide, I support the peaceful voices and hope this brings justice to an issue that has been going on for decades upon decades. I’m embarrassed for my country, how in 2020 we collectively refuse to learn from the mistakes of our past, time and time again. The peaceful protests nationwide that are unfolding are necessary, completely understandable and long over due. I vividly remember the Rodney King incident from 1992, the riots that took place and afterwards thinking that surely things would change, but nothing did. I grew up around this decisive, ignorant hatred; when I was a teenager 2 of my friends were shot in a drive-by from a car full of skinheads with a shotgun; one friend lost an eye and the other was hit in the hand, all over color. As the decades have rolled by there have been countless more atrocities nationwide and things have continued to escalate. I’m grateful that there’s a camera in nearly everyone’s hands these days and things can be filmed, shared and expose these assholes. I pray this time things change with civil rights, I hope we can figure out gun laws that actually mean something, it’s easier to get a drivers license than it is a gun where I live. My country doesn’t even have a “clean water and air act” anymore, small businesses are dying, opioid crisis, minimal support for mental illness, healthcare, and the list goes on. What is happening???
