It was an unseasonably cold day (which was great) but that meant raging winds and challenging conditions. I left my house at 11pm and spent 21 hours out riding/hiking (managed to mostly avoid traffic!). Approximately 120mi on the bike, 25mi hiking, and 17k ft of vertical total. My friend Benny helped support on Potosi - he paced me on the bike and scrambled up the north ridge of the mountain with me. I listened to 5 podcasts while I biked through the night about the protests sweeping the country and then chatted with Benny about it all for hours. A long day in the mountains is probably my favorite way to organize my thoughts. I’m very encouraged that demonstrators are already seeing some results and that we as a country are having real conversations about how to build a more equitable society. My 2 cents - I think “defund the police” has a bad ring to it since people hear it as “disband the police” and obviously society needs some kind of referee to uphold the rules. But both my parents are teachers and I’ve spent my whole life experiencing how we “defund education” - I’d rather support education and social services over law enforcement... At the very least society should be considering what our values are and how to live by them - re-examining our justice system is a good place to start. And while I’m ranting about justice - I think it’s shameful to disenfranchise felons. Taking away someone’s right to vote is a sure way to make them care even less about society. I think everyone should have a say in how our country is run... Lots of random thoughts from a long day out...」6月12日 1時30分 - alexhonnold
