Photos by @babaktafreshi | On a May night in Texas, with a far storm on the horizon and clear sky above, it was the perfect condition for this rarely captured phenomenon. This is a close-up of red sprites, an atmospheric puzzle. These large-scale electrical discharges occur in clusters above the troposphere about 50 to 90 kilometers (31 to 56 miles) high. Sprites are visible to unaided eyes as well, but they appear colorless and usually faint as just a patch of light flashing in the sky. A sensitive camera reveals the true color and stunning details. Sprites are challenging to capture, as they appear for only a fraction of a second and are much fainter than lightning. Swipe to see a wider angle view of another sprite a few minutes earlier.
