Man, I’ll never forget going on tour with the great Lionel Hampton Band back in the 50s because it was my first real venture out into the touring world, as a newly minted 18 year old “adult.” My roommate, the unparalleled Little Jimmy Scott, was an absolute brother to me & I mean it when I say you wouldn’t believe some of the things we had to do on that tour…Every time we’d play a show in a new city, we’d have to travel far & wide after the gig just to find a place that would take “our kind.” I’ll never forget passing through Virginia, when we had to sleep in a funeral home, in a room full of caskets—I’m talkin' about caskets with bodies inside!!…because the nearby hotels wouldn’t let us stay. Even through it all, night after night, Jimmy would stand there on stage with his shoulders hunched, eyes closed, head tilted to one side, & belt like a horn!! He’d put us all on our knees with that voice, giving us hope in the most emotional, soul-piercing style. Today marks exactly 6 years since you went home my brother, but your story & spirit lives on…You may have been “little” but maaannn, U were MIGHTY! Back then AND today… Never forgotten!!
