Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | Abandoned miner’s home, Kolmanskop, Namibia. In the early twentieth century, a railroad worker spotted a scattering of diamonds on the dried surface of a riverbed. The desolate region was soon descended upon by crowds of fortune hunters, and a diamond rush ensued, with a mine producing a staggering million carats a year. Within just two decades, the diamonds were depleted. The fortune seekers moved on, but the houses and shops remain. From my new book THE HUMAN PLANET: Earth at the Dawn of the Anthropocene. Autographed copies available via link in @geosteinmetz IG bio.
