Have you ever seen, or tasted, a purple passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)? This fast-growing climbing vine plant is native to the southeastern United States; it’s also called “maypop” for the sound its fruit makes when squished. Bees and ants feed on the flower’s nectar, while a number of critters, from butterfly larvae to songbirds, snack on its egg-sized fruit. Humans also munch on its fruits, which can be eaten raw or made into jam or jelly!
