In celebration of #Juneteenth and commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, we want to honor the legacy of master storyteller, activist, and mother, Denise Valentine, known to many as Story Mama, who transitioned in March of this year, and whose life and work was dedicated to forgotten and neglected African and African American Histories. She stated, “Blackness is deeper than the color of my skin. It is an inheritance of collective memory, of strength, of pride, and of joy. Of unspeakable pain and shame and dysfunction, too. But also the tremendous capacity for badassery. And to overcome whatever we are faced with.” Valentine was a member of the National Association of Black Storytellers and founder of The Philadelphia Middle Passage Ceremony & Port Marker Project, helping to earn Philadelphia a designation as an official UNESCO “Site of Memory” in acknowledgement of the city’s involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. She was also a member of the artistic team for the 2017 project "Philadelphia Assembled," the 2018 artist-in-residence at Mount Pleasant historic house, and an advisor to the museum's new galleries of early American art.

As we witness the wakes of slavery that remain today, may we find inspiration in the stories and wisdom of Denise Valentine. We encourage you to visit a video on our YouTube channel of our 2019 program that featured Valentine and art historian Adrienne Childs offering their perspectives on historical representations of Black people in the context of slavery.
