It’s true that the interior of Antarctica can be extremely cold. The plateau in the interior holds the record for the lowest temperature recorded on Earth, at minus 89.2°C (-128.5°F), at Vostok Station in 1983. The average yearly temperature on the Antarctic coast, however, is a relatively balmy minus 10°C (14°F). I usually visit Antarctica during the warmer months, from October to March. Temperatures average between minus 5°C and 5°C (23-41°F) during this period. The weather is very unpredictable and localized, and it is influenced by accelerating katabatic winds that blow off the plateau down to the coast.
