I love this exploration by @holidayphillips It seems like a conversation that so many of the friends in my feed could get a lot from. I know it was helpful for me. I don’t always do it perfectly, but awareness can help us see our mistakes, forgive ourselves and others, move forward and do better. Repost from @holidayphillips

I think a lot about how we can talk about complex and polarizing issues. I find that often the only way we think we can engage when people have differing opinions is through debate. "Debates" can be traced back as far as Ancient Greece, and originated as "a formal discussion on a particular matter in which opposing arguments are put forward and which usually ends in a vote". In short, a competitive conversation where the goal is for one side to win. Historically as well as being used to resolve important matters, debates were often used as sport or entertainment. So less about actually getting to a better conclusion together, but more for the enjoyment of being in in verbal combat.

As I personally engage in often difficult conversations on the polarising topic of race, I find myself wondering, if the place we're ultimately trying to get to is shared understanding, is debate always the best way? Dialogue, is often my preferred way - a cooperative, two-way conversation where the goal is to exchange information and build relationships.

This isn't to say that people shouldn't be combative or engage in debate, but more that when talking about polarising issues it's helpful for everyone to know what kind of conversation they're in. That way we're starting on at least that as common ground.

I made this table as a useful way to check that. What kind of conversations do you find yourself in when it comes to polarising topics?
.
PS: i DEFINITELY do not always do this, sometimes I am combative and want to win, sometimes I even actively try to offend 🙈 And I forgive myself for that (you should too) - what this helps me do is not be “perfect” but just be aware of what im doing so i can try to choose a better way next time.
