This symbolic gesture of resistance and reverence is part of the protests sweeping the nation against systemic racism, police violence, and the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody after Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes. Taking a knee refers not only to Floyd’s cause of death but also to football player Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality and racial injustice during the national anthem in NFL games, which only a few years ago created controversy and outrage. Today, many of the same people who opposed Kaepernick are issuing apology statements, like the NFL commissioner, who said, “We the National Football League admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest.” It is yet another sign of the powerful impact the current movement is having in the United States.
