Photo by @stephen_matera | The sun sets over the summit of Mount Rainier in late summer. Mount Rainier receives incredible annual snowfall, averaging 640 inches per year at Paradise, at 5,400 feet (1,646 meters) on the south side of the mountain. Higher elevations generally will receive more precipitation, allowing for the creation of large glaciers on all sides of the mountain. The Carbon Glacier (the upper portion of which is shown on the top left of the mountain in this image) on the northwest side is over five miles (eight kilometers) long and extends down to an elevation of 3,500 feet (1,067 meters), which is the lowest elevation glacier in the contiguous United States.
