On this evening I was leading my workshop group in a vast, remote area of the Icelandic Highlands as a storm started to clear. We had been photographing in another area where the moody light of the storm worked well with features on the ground, but as the storm suddenly began to lift, I made the call to get back into our super trucks so that we could drive to the edge of the cloud shelf. We found it when we reached this ridge of peaks, where I could see a series of volcanos and hints of a cliff that suggested a valley below. With only minutes to spare before the sun would set, I leaped out of the vehicle and called for the group to follow me. We grabbed our gear, and I ran full-speed to the edge of the cliff, veering further to the left as I saw the snaking river leading in that direction. In moments like this one, it helps to have many years of experience to draw upon in making instinctive decisions. Navigating only on a hunch, I was delighted when I found that the snaking river aligned beautifully with the illuminated volcano in the distance. We did not have long to enjoy this scene before the sun dipped below the horizon, but that short time was all that we needed to create photographs that we will enjoy forever."
