As an African American woman during the civil rights movement, Alma Thomas reinterpreted the world around her through colorful patterns. Her abstract paintings were inspired by nature outside her living room windows and the Apollo Moon landings shown on TV.
Originally from Columbus, Georgia, Thomas moved with her family as a teenager to escape the racial oppression and violence of the South and to seek better education opportunities. She spent 38 years as a D.C. public school art teacher before her painting career took off. In 1972, in her 80s, Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the @whitneymuseum.
