Introducing Shawn Hunt, a multidisciplinary Heiltsuk artist based on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. ⠀ ⠀ The Heiltsuk culture has been described as having a strong visual and oral history rather than a written one. Shawn’s work seeks to continue this visual culture, looking at art as language. His work reimagines the traditional technique of “formline art” found in Northern visual history. By using the traditional black line as a skeleton for the other elements, he allows himself a freedom within the work while retaining the integrity of the practice. By working in this way, he submerges his work into the cyclical trajectory of art informed by past generations.⠀ His paintings, sculptures, and jewelry all inform one another to create an overlapping body of work that asks the big questions, rather than exploring the answers.
