This NOT one of my best photographs, the composition is just... meh... and the light is so so... However to me what is depicted within this frame is out of this world mind blowing!!! Two white rhinos with the Indian Ocean in the background. To my knowledge this is the only image of its kind. Today that location along South Africa’s east coast is no longer home to rhinos. The majority were poached or killed in controversial trophy hunts. In 2005 I spent weeks trying photograph one unique rhino in particular. It slept near and defecated right on the beach in front of the breaking waves. From my camp it was a hour long off road drive, followed by another hour on foot to get to this special place. However ‘my’ rhino would always do its ‘beachside business’ in total darkness, then wander up into the grassy hills to greet the sunrise there. After two weeks of trying and failing (it was always too dark when the rhino was on the beach) i ran out of time. While I did not get the iconic image I wanted, i do have is this simple record shot and many fond memories of stalking rhinos along South Africa’s Wild Coast.
