Made in the 1880s, this plaster cast shows a Maya king holding a shield on his left arm. It was cast from an architectural fragment in the Maya city of Yaxchilan, in modern-day Mexico
It is one of around 500 casts in the collection that remain a vital resource to scholars studying Maya inscriptions and iconography.
The Museum works alongside colleagues from Guatemala, Belize, Mexico and Honduras to research these objects, and increase access through digitisation and outreach. Find out more on @googleartsculture via the link in our bio.
