I wrote a poem titled "Let’s Go See the Nuclear Reactor." I had music composed for it, sang the song myself in English and Japanese, made a music video to go with it, and am going to release it soon. It will be one of my works in the upcoming group exhibition, Stars, at the Mori Art Museum @森美術館 ; I will have the roughly 7-minute-long video playing on loop on a monitor.
I wrote the lyric back in 2016 and had the music composed after that, and now I am finally completing the project… so I suppose it’s taken me four years. Whatever I try my hands on, it takes a long time to complete.
In 2011 there was the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant meltdown, radiation permeating all over Tokyo as well. There were hot spots and areas that received high density radiation. Living through such a reality, I have been bemused that the Olympics is to take place in Tokyo under the circumstance. The athletes must feel really conflicted.
For a time, the mood in Japan had been such that if I were to voice such a concern, I would be mocked for my “radiation brain.” But now with COVID-19, for the time being the Olympics wont’ be happening. And it seems that people here would rather not care about the radiation etc. after the nuclear power plant meltdown.
My intention with this project was to paint a self-portrait of the Japanese people who live their days absent-mindedly in such a condition. I persisted and persevered to make something satisfactory, and I think it shows. I hope you’ll have a chance to take a look! I also re-recorded the Japanese version of the song yesterday. ZAK @namioto and Yumiko @yumikoohno , thank you so much!
And thank you Josh Gudwin @joshgudwin for the vocal instructions and re-recording of the English version!
I’ll be posting it on Instagram in the coming days as well.
