Photo by @paoloverzone Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway. Birte Kulla, a student at the Alfred Wegener Institute, calibrates a radiosonde before launching a weather balloon to measure and record meteorological data, radiation, aerosols and trace gases, and ozone concentrations, from ground level to the stratosphere. This allows researchers to keep a close eye on climate and atmospheric changes. Ny-Ålesund is called the largest laboratory for modern Arctic research–it's labs and stations operated by eleven countries, bringing together researchers from across the globe and from different research disciplines. I’ve been at the Ny-Ålesund station three times, following the work of scientists in the field. Follow @paoloverzone for more photos and stories and @awiexpedition for polar research.
