Drkmttr provides space, and what we do, and have done with that space, is deeply political. We’re in Tennessee, a conservative state steeped in snake-oil religion and racism. Alternative spaces like ours are needed to gather ideas and provide young people a sense of belonging and support, to let their voices be heard.  In the 1960s, the Black Panthers, tired of being overlooked by the government’s insufficient attempts to help oppressed Black citizens, created their own community programs: free breakfast for children, clothing distribution, medical clinics. In the 1980s, Food Not Bombs was created by anti-nuclear activists to feed the hungry with vegetarian and vegan food salvaged from grocery stores and restaurants.   Nashville has had a local Food Not Bombs chapter for decades, and free stores and community fridge programs across the country help get resources like food, clothing and diapers to those who need them. Other ways to organize for your neighbors include rideshares and childcare collectives.  Mutual aid isn’t just material, it’s emotional. Together, organizers of all ages can continue to create new, ever-evolving mutual aid programs in our cities.
