Created in 1982, the painting belongs to the artist’s “Egyptian Series” which was celebrated in Riley’s retrospective exhibition at the @hayward.gallery earlier this year. A trip to Egypt in 1979 led to a fascination with the dynamic use of colour in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings, and ‘Cool Edge’ bears all the hallmark hues of her celebrated ‘Egyptian palette’ - violet, aquamarine, coral and yellow.
