Photo by @stevewinterphoto This is from my December 2019 @ナショナルジオグラフィック story on captive tigers in the U.S., which outnumber tigers in the wild. This image shows a break in the action with staff at the Myrtle Beach Tiger Safari. There are many operations across the country that profit from tiger displays, allowing tourists to engage with them. Young cubs are a big part of the business; packages for playing and having photos taken with them run from $339 to $689 a person. At about 12 weeks old, cubs are considered too big and dangerous for tourists to pet. But these animals can never be released into the wild because they have human imprinting— meaning they are not fearful of people. What’s more, some cub petting operations are linked to the illegal wildlife trade and even traditional medicine markets. Supporting places that allow you to take selfies with tiger or lion cubs ultimately harms these animals. Follow me @stevewinterphoto for more big cat stories.
