A Tuskegee Airman sits on the wing of his plane, looking to the skies in this photograph captured by Robert Scurlock.
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American pilots who flew combat missions in racially segregated units in World War II. This week in 1941, the first class of Black aviation cadets who would become the Tuskegee Airmen began training at Tuskegee.
"One lesser-known part of the Tuskegee Airmen’s story is their coordinated, collective civil disobedience to stand up against systemic racism in the US Army Air Forces, at the risk of their careers and lives," explains the National Air and Space Museum. Click the link in our bio to learn more.
