Frits Thaulow was a Norwegian Impressionist painter, best known for his naturalistic depictions of marine landscapes. Thaulow was one of the earliest artists to paint in Skagen, a village located at the northernmost part of Denmark, before it became famous of its “Skagen Painters”—a group of Scandinavian artists strongly influenced by French Impressionism and the Realist movement. His paintings are usually characterized by the play of light on water, and the foreshortened path of rivers and creeks are often a main element of his compositions.
