Élève de David, Marie-Guillemine Benoist fait preuve d’audace avec ce portrait : elle reprend les codes des portraits mondains de David mais utilisés ici pour représenter une ancienne esclave. - 👩🏾 Madame Benoist rend avec virtuosité la couleur de la peau noire, qu’elle oppose au blanc immaculé des vêtements de son modèle. Elle affirme ainsi la dignité et la beauté de la jeune femme comme ses qualités de peintre. - ✍️ Cette œuvre marque une rupture dans l’art français mais aussi dans la représentation des noirs de France en 1800, au moment où elle est exposée au Salon. Sur asserted the dignity and beauty of the young woman as well as her qualities as a painter. - ✍️ This work marked a break in the representation of black figures in France in 1800, when it was exhibited at the Salon.
