NASA plans to send a balloon the size of a football field into Earth’s stratosphere to learn how stars and planets form. The balloon will depart from Antarctica in December 2023, as part of the space agency’s ASTHROS mission. The instruments dangling below the balloon, including a far-infrared telescope, will focus on star-forming regions in the Milky Way and other galaxies. Researchers are aiming to study a process called “stellar feedback,” which is understood to be “the main regulator of star formation throughout the universe's history,” according to one of the mission’s principal investigators.
