Hello again! This is Amy Longa; I’m sharing my story on Sarah Wayne Callies’ Instagram as part of #SharetheMic. I am a mother and a former refugee who helps other refugees resettle in the U.S.

The photo I am sharing in this post is of my graduation from Norwich University. After arriving in the US, I learned that I could not practice law using certificate(s) I had earned in Uganda. As a mother of two little boys, I decided to go back to school – not to law school partly because of the high costs but to graduate school for a Master’s in International Diplomacy in 2010. In 2014, I was hired to open @RESCUEorg’s office in Garden City, Kansas. That office closed in 2017, but not before we had worked to help many newly arrived refugees become productive members of their new communities.

As a citizen of the U.S. I don’t take my responsibility to this country lightly. First of all, I vote in both local and national elections because I know that my voice does count. I also serve in an advisory committee to the city commission so our city may grow to serve our people within – especially new members of the community, including former refugees.

As a Black woman and mother in America, I am reading and listening to resources that would educate me on matters of racism. Without the knowledge, I cannot be effective in advocating for my children or community. I also realize that I must work on my own personal prejudices, too. To help me continue to grow, here is a small sample of some books I am reading, have read, or am planning to read:

▪️Born A Crime by Trevor Noah (I can also relate to Noah’s story. I feel like no matter where I go, I don’t belong. Our society tends to alienate humans for reasons that are not of our making(s). For instance because one is Black, or poor, or can’t speak the language of the majority, is a displaced person, and so forth.)

▪️So You Want to Talk About Race, by Ijeoma Oluo

▪️Between the World and Me, By Ta-Nehisi Coates

▪️Becoming, By Michelle Obama (This book has helped me to keep my head high. I could relate to her story of struggles and yet finding space for gratitude but not to compromise morale for anger.)
