Less than 300 people on earth have done this. I was the first black woman to do so. Throughout my journey, people assumed I worked for an airline or that I was traveling on false documents. Immigration officers in dozens of countries have treated me poorly including here in the United States. A customs officer once asked me for a second form of ID because my US passport wasn’t enough to grant me entry into my country of birth. Despite hurdles, I still travel. For me, travel is freedom. Life beyond these American borders is much better for black people than they would have us believe. Travel allows me to exist beyond the box that this country so desperately wants to put me in. On my journey I met people that were curious often, hostile rarely. Once you get past immigration you are most likely to be met by locals who are grateful to have you in their country, grateful to show you their way of life. What I learned on my journey is that most people are good and no matter how awful things may seem, this remains true.
