Museum photographer Roger Fenton died #onthisday in 1869.

Best known for his work during the Crimean War, he also took these pioneering 3D images of the Museum in the 1850s, combining two offset photos to create an illusion of depth 📸

They were known as stereoscopic images, and were viewed through a stereo viewer or ‘stereoscope’ – a device similar to a modern-day Google Cardboard with each eye looking through a different aperture.
