It’s #InternationalCatDay so we’re sharing one of the most famous felines in the collection – the Gayer-Anderson Cat.

In ancient Egypt cats were highly valued as pets ,but also acquired religious significance. This object dates to around 600 BC and depicts Bastet, the mother goddess 🐱

Thousands of bronze figures of gods, in varying sizes and forms, were dedicated in temples throughout Egypt, but only someone very wealthy like a king could have afforded to commission an example as fine this.
