Its graceful water bends around a port city with a spirit in the past, the other in the present. The Dhubri Girls’ High School empowers young girls, and I hope a future firmer than their mother’s. There was unpleasantness I cannot forget...It was our first night in Dhubri. @ankitha_rs, the fireball take-no-prisoners dear friend and translator, Ram @kewalmauryatravels, and I ate at a tastiest simple restaurant. After dinner, Ankitha and I went outside to smoke a cigarette. Within seconds, an irate man arrived screaming - “a woman should not smoke in public!” Ankita held her ground, telling the fool to leave her alone. Becoming louder, he yelled, “This is Assam! Women don’t do that here!”. Continually spewing male nonsense, he became more aggressive. Ram and I talked to him when he threatened to hit her. He wouldn’t have anything to do with us, wholly affixed on abuse. Ankitha stood her ground, hurling his nonsense back. As reason became useless, we left the restaurant, the idiot, and other men who’d gathered in ill-minded foolishness. It was so wrong, Ankitha wanted to file a complaint. Wonderfully, the restaurant owner was a woman, had video recorded the entire altercation, and found Ankitha’s mobile number, sending it through Whatsapp. With evidence, the police knew who he was, brought the fool to jail, in tears behind bars. I’ve been thinking about that night, wondering if the token foreigner had not been there, would he or the other men physically abused Ankitha? Would the police even believe Ankitha without the video recorded by another powerful woman? I think of my daughter, and I think of these girls, firmly standing at a school that’s been empowering women since 1968 and worry, how free will they be in patriarchy that sustains oppression? There is hope.
