“Last year, I took more than 100 flights, travelling to 23 countries on four continents,” the journalist Jon Lee Anderson writes. “I wasn’t home for more than a few weeks at a time—my habit since I started working as a foreign correspondent, almost 40 years ago.” During the coronavirus quarantine, Anderson has spent five long months at home—and has found time to reflect on his many journeys around the world, and what inspired him to start travelling in the first place. “Among the artifacts in my office are a pile of journals, which I began keeping in my early teens.
