Photos by @BabakTafreshi In April 2016 I was documenting the nighttime environment of Cerro Paranal, home to the European Southern Observatory in the Atacama Desert of Chile. A rare fireball, almost as bright as the moon, lit up the sky in this incredible moment. My camera was continuously imaging a time-lapse sequence, and the meteor was recorded on this single frame. Swipe for a closer view. Fireballs are meteors brighter than planet Venus (the brightest object in the night sky after the moon). Most visible meteors do not create meteorites, as they are caused by small pebble or grain-size particles only one to two grams in mass. But a fireball like this often leaves a meteorite.
