Two years ago, I saw this DC-10 air tanker—one of four currently in operation—drop its vibrant red fire retardant as it battled a wildfire in my hometown, which I photographed from my front door as I evacuated. The fire raging now is 20 miles north of my town, and I'm once again so grateful for the hundreds of fire personnel working relentlessly to protect these places.
