Photo by @amandamustard In Thailand, mahouts (traditional elephant caretakers) collect watermelons to feed six elephants under their care. Under normal pre-pandemic circumstances, diverse dietary options are delivered directly from the farms. But without any tourism revenue, mahouts are having to seek out discounted or donated sources of food - often harvesting themselves - to keep the elephants fed. Thailand’s borders remain sealed off to tourists indefinitely, causing incredible hardship for those who rely on the income to survive.
