The National Woman’s Party adopted purple, white and gold as the three colors of suffrage. The tricolor badge signaled the bearer’s allegiance to the National Woman’s Party, building a recognizable brand for the movement.
British suffragettes used purple, white and green for their campaign colors. The National Woman’s Party replaced green with yellow as a reference to Kansas’s state flower, the sunflower, which was used to campaign for a failed statewide suffrage referendum in 1867.
Cora A. Week wore this name badge at the Congressional Union Convention of 1915. She was later arrested as part of a massive protest against the arrest of National Woman’s Party leader Alice Paul.
