Among the world's most active volcanoes, its spectacular but usually small eruptions can be seen from all around, giving the island the nickname of the "lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” If you want to get close to the eruptions, arrive at the summit before sunset to witness a spectacular view. Having visited the island several times, I've learned that its magic goes beyond this astonishing daily show. The magic is in the people who inhabit the island and refer to the volcano as a living entity, calling it “Iddu” (Sicilian for "He").
