The carnation watercolor was a serendipitous accident, or perhaps that of a gift. I was playing around with tubed paints and so immersed that I did not realize I had a nice smidgen of it on my finger until I smeared it in the middle of a fresh journal page. Typically such moments are no big thing at all, but when working with extra nice quality paper, I tend to get a bit more fussed over such. But then I remembered that what starts as a mess is just a possibility awaiting to be transformed into something else, and that’s what ended up happening here. With eyes for wonder and a playful heart, a bit of dousing of water and the movement of a brush, an abrupt unsightly smudge turned into a delightful flower. What a metaphor for life, arriving at just the right time, the gift of needed reminders and perspective. We go about our days and inevitably make messes along the way, but with an eye for wonder, a heart for possibility and some creative turns, what was once a mess can be turned into beauty, into joy, into art.
