In the mid-1990s she travelled in an RV across the United States on a two month road trip photographing lesbian couples or families in their homes. This resulted in a series of large-scale colour portraits like this one, accompanied by a group of smaller still life images from the various settings. ☕ This view of women living together, gathered around the kitchen table, challenges traditional assumptions we might have about what a ‘domestic’ scene looks like. They have created their chosen family through community, rather than biological relationships. Opie’s photography links the personal and documentary capacities of the medium. Her focus for this series is the idea of community and how communities are formed and identified. What is the relationship between the individual and the space they inhabit?
