It’s a holiday and it’s Monday, so it seems like as good a time as any for some #macromondayfun. On a recent work shoot, excitement for macro photography mixed with some friendly competition with @devoderby resulted in a new idea — Macro Monday Fun! The hope is to spread the joy of macro photography by encouraging people to get out there and explore the tiny worlds in nature, even if the only nature nearby is a small plot of land or a single blade of grass.

This week’s theme was “edgy plants”. Going through my old photos and taking new ones for this has gotten me even more excited about all the things macro has to offer, and has sparked some bigger ideas for the future. But for now, here’s my edgy plants album, and explanations of why I chose each:

(1) A new edit of an old iPhone shot from 2017. I picked this photo because it has an “experimental” feel to it, and more importantly, because I still absolutely adore this photo even though I now have more gear and more experience than I did when I took it. You can make pretty stuff even without all the gears and all the years.

(2) A plant thing sporting an edgy hair do. I picked this photo because it was a fun find, and discovering these surprising little scenes in nature is one of the things I love most about macro photography.

(3) An iPhone photo I shot yesterday of some nifty little bug eggs left on a tiny leaf. I chose this photo because it is the perfect example of the mini adventures that macro never fails to provide. To summarize yesterday — I came for the “edgy plant” photos, but I stayed for the weird bug eggs. Every time I go out to shoot macro, I never know what I’m going to find, and that excitement doesn’t get old, ever.

(4) A photo of a leaf and droplets in my front yard shot with a weird flash that I love experimenting with. I chose this because I took it right in my yard, and it involved a single leaf and a few droplets — that’s not a lot of nature, but I’m certain it provided at least 45 minutes of outdoor joy for me.

Join the fun if you feel so inclined by using #macromondayfun! Update: A new theme will be introduced every other week.
