There has been a lot of talk (and action!) about monuments coming down and discussion about what should go up. Who is and will be creating the work that now goes up is front of mind. When you imagine artists who have created monuments, who comes to mind? What would the monument landscape look like if it was created by women, and especially, women of color? In episode 1 of @publicartfund’s podcast #PublicArtWorks, @hankwillisthomas and @darrencwalker of @fordfoundation have a conversation about monuments that has really stuck with me. Darren said, “I am very concerned about the fact that the representation of our history is not actually full. And that part of the job today is to write, w-r-i-t-e, history and to right, r-i-g-h-t, history.” Pictured here is Sharon Heyes, “If They Should Ask” for @monument_lab in 2017. The piece recognized Philadelphia women, from the mid-1600s to the present day, who could have been or could be recognized with monuments. I would highly recommend visiting monumentlab.com to learn more about the work (and all of their other projects). @womeninthearts has a great campaign every March - Can you name #5WomenArtists ? With that in mind, can you name 5 monuments by women artists?
