Video by @DaisyGilardini / It's rush hour on Deception Island's Baily Head beach. The island is the caldera of an active volcano and lies in Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands.
On the side of the caldera’s eastern outer slope, we can find one of the largest chinstrap penguin colonies in Antarctica, consisting of roughly 50,000 pairs. Despite their seemingly healthy overall numbers, their population is decreasing over most of the Antarctic Peninsula’s nesting sites. Scientists attribute the decline to climate change—which affects the abundance of krill, their main food source—coupled with expansion of the commercial krill fishery, which affects krill numbers as well.
