The Winter of 1989-90 will be remembered as the season when tuberiding officially entered the realm of big-wave surfing on the North Shore of Oahu. Spearheading that charge was 23-year-old Haleiwa local Brock Little with a pivotal tuberide in the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big-Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay.

This was before PWC assist, before institutionalized safety protocols and before lifesaving gear like impact or floatation vests. That event not only changed the way big-wave surfers looked at their performance, but how they looked at big waves themselves.

Sadly, Brock passed away from cancer less than two years after Surfline shot this interview with him. We can gain consolation in the fact that left this world the same way he came into it: A warrior… with a great sense of humor.
