“I didn’t ask for the size of my head, it just showed up like an overgrown vegetable.
I didn’t ask for white privilege, it was just left on my doorstep.
I didn’t ask for the maid, but she was there when I caught you with her once, and there was a smell in the room when my little brother was born.
I didn’t ask for mama to drink and throw mugs, glasses, and open hands through windows towards those who she fell defied her.
I didn’t ask for the man to stab me on the street when I was looking for food, and I didn’t ask the cops to pepper spray me and my friend as he was being tasered because he was black and for no other reason than black black black.
I didn’t ask how all this would pan out or how to navigate through all these people looking for their cheese.
I didn’t ask for hate or love. I didn’t know about it until you taught me but I, surely, didn’t ask for the size of my head: it just came this way — and my short legs looking like they do, that you say make me look funny.
I didn’t ask for the rage of it, it just showed up in the world’s arms, presented raw, and I felt when I got in your way, felt when the girl walked away, felt when my friend shot himself, felt when they told me to sit up straight and kiss those people you told me too.
