Photo by @laurelchor Swadiq Khan owns Chrisly Cafe, a chain of “cha chaan teng” – or traditional Hong Kong diners. As a mixed-race child, he faced discrimination. “A cha chaan teng is a very inclusive space. Anyone can come here.”
As Hong Kong loses rights and freedoms it once had, many young people are feeling hopeless about their future. Khan wants to help by hiring them: “We have a lot of grievances, we have anger. But we should press on. This is the hard-knock spirit I learned from growing up in a public housing estate. I am just a small-time business owner, I can't change the world. I can only do a little bit for the people around me.”
